Frito Fest - Apr 20 @ the Festivilla
Copy by amanonfire

The evening started off innocently enough, I got to our singer's house to be greeted by his Godzilla dog that can't control his bladder. So I started the evening off with German shepherd urine on my shoes. MORE>>

Render One / Perfect Nothing / Forefront / 7DFC / Calico System / Pupil / Malfakter - Apr 10 @ the Emerson
by
an angry monkey with a messianic complex and no thumbs

OK, so halfway through writing this show review I started wondering what Oprah would think about this show in particular. Don't ask why, that's just how my mind works sometimes. So I had to rewrite this a couple of times. MORE>>

The Wailers - Apr 11 @ the Vogue
by Adrienne D. Porter

Thursday, April 11 was a gorgeous day, temperate and sunny with potential for anything. I skipped out of work early and went to meet friends for margaritas and conversation. We tossed back a few 'ritas in the sun and basked in the perfection of the day. CB and I had plans to go to the Wailers show at the Vogue. I was just hoping my body could keep up with my buzz. Even Homer Nods EP
CD Review by Royston Lloyd

Even Homer Nods live in Indianapolis and as far as I am aware are all completely American. Yet this EP with songs like "A day at the races for wolves" brings British music hall comparisons to my mind every time I listen to it. MORE>>

The Greenhornes / Pop Lolita / the one hundreds / The Brand Plastic - 4/19 @ the Patio (Moxy's B-day!) Preview
by Moxy

I get asked often what bands get the attention of my cd player. For over a year, my most enthusiastic and consistent answer has been the Greenhornes from Cincinnati. The Greenhornes are best described as a psych garage rock band in the true spirit of the Animals. Without fail, their self- titled debut album has been in regular rotation in my cd changer since I was first introduced to their music. MORE>>

Pop Lolita - Smokerings and Halos
CD Review by Steve Hayes

I'm a sucker for records that crackle with energy. Albums like 'With The Beatles,' 'The Pretenders,' and 'This Year's Model' grab you at the first note and refuse to release you until the needle is on the inner groove of side two. These are the records that I listen to when I need to drive somewhere in a hurry. I'm excited to say that Pop Lolita's 'Smokerings and Halos' captures the same energy as each of the legendary recordings I mentioned. MORE>>

Y'allapalooza unites Indy's top Americana acts for one night
Concert Preview by Steve Hayes

Call it Americana. Alt-country. No Depression. Roots Rock. I could go on. It's country with rock swagger. Or is it rock with a country twang? MORE>>

Indiana bands poised to stake a claim on the Americana scene
by Steve Hayes

Along with the bands on the Y'allapalooza bill this weekend, there are many other acts who are cranking out quality material that fits nicely in the Americana/Alt-Country/No Depression file. Here's a sampling: MORE>>

Buckra - Apr 13 @ Birdy's
Copy by Joh Padgett

You know it's going to be an interesting evening when the lead singer, while introducing his band, manages to make reference to an obscure '80s television show set in Indy called 'Hello Larry' which starred McLean Stevenson (of M*A*S*H* fame). And interesting is what was delivered - fresh, piping hot and delicious tunes from the boys in Buckra. MORE>>

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead / Explosions In The Sky - Mar 22 @ Radio Radio
Copy/Pics by T.C.

At one point, the stage gear begins to wobble from the thrashing, the cymbal stands tumble and the cabinets teeter. I wonder if a full-fledged blast is coming, but I don't need it. I realize that I'm witnessing an event that proves to me that current music isn't always a pale, impotent parody of Rock's original, vital essence. MORE>>

Citizens Band/Brand Plastic/Punkin Holler Boys - Apr 5 @ Birdy's
Copy/Pics by Dustin Gyzm

Friday night, April 5th 2001, marked the date of Citizens Band first appearance at Birdy's, or anywhere for that matter that year. They found a way to take over Birdy's again on the same night this year. They managed to pack the house this time, leave everyone screaming for more, and forever alter the face of alternative country music. MORE>>

Musicians, music fans, and critics who have been crying for something different might find their thirst for originality quenched with a short drive to Muncie on Thursday, April 11. Muncie-based BRAZIL is teaming with members of the Ball State Symphony Orchestra to present CONQUER, an event the band calls an 'implied fable for the information age.' MORE>>

Slur
CD Review by St. Mykal

This CD takes me back. It takes me back to when White Zombie was only on The Box and goatees were starting to become the fashion norm. Twelve tracks on a self-titled release come to us from these Hoosier boys, who've set their sights on the national scene. MORE>>

Insider Tip O' the Day:

Looking for some band websites? Need to do a gig swap in Indy with a metal band? The Emerson Theater's website has started compling an impressive list of bands (not genre-exclusive), with web links. To peep it, go www.emersontheater.com".

In related newz, IMN's band section is still being revamped. Our midgets are working hard to make the list as accurate, useful, and as unique as possible. Stay tuned for it in the coming weeks!

D.R.I./Paradox 44/Suicide Note/Run Devil Run/The Hoods @ The Emerson Theater 3/31/02
Copy/Pics by St. Mykal

It was hard and heavy Sunday night at The Emerson, with a slew of bands opening for the truly old school hardcore outfit, D.R.I. Attendance was definitely up from the last time I was able to catch the 'Imbeciles when they came through last year. The group was celebrating a history of their hardcore speed metal meets punk music spanning two decades with the tour "20 Dirty Rotten Years Together". MORE>>

Coal Chamber/Ill Nino/40 Below Summer/Rumor Factor - Mar 27 @ Murat Egyptian Room
Copy by Jorge Jumanji

This was a big event for Bloomington's Rumor Factor. Being asked to open the show in Indianapolis for a line up of national heavy acts is no small feat. Rumor Factor kicked it old school, or new school retro, with chunky hard guitar and a steady rock force. The foursome stuck to their guns for the set, keeping the momentum going forward with minimal guitar leads and thick humbucker backed rhythms. It was stripped down raw hard rock, almost like The Cult but without the frills and hair. MORE>>

Danny Isaacs Band
CD review by Brad Sprauer

I first heard the Danny Isaacs Band at the INM CD Release show and was very impressed. The first words that came to mind were, "Americana Rock and Roll". So I was very happy to have this disk and the opportunity to give my opinion. MORE>>

Duvall
Standing at the Door
CD review by Jesse Charles

The first Duvall EP is catchier than a cold. There are a mere 4 tracks on the disc, but in the 6 days that I've owned it, I have learned all the words. It is a sing along CD, plain and clear, not to mention the fact that this has more pop appeal than 90% of the music you'd hear on MTV's TRL. MORE>>
