"From jazz and blues to rock-n-roll, Indianapolis music fans will find what they're looking for on one CD from our talented, local musicians."
-- Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson
INDY MP3 PROJECT
[ Introduction ]
Indianapolis is a city that is defined by many sounds that arent music. The sound of a basketball pounding the hardwood and the roar of a racecar circling the Speedway are a couple of things that come to mind when talking about "the sound of Indianapolis." Most people, however, dont think of Indianapolis as a "music town." Theres no unique style of music linked to our city like Chicagos blues or New Orleans jazz. Also, Indys contributions to the worldwide music community have been few and far between. While we continue to point with pride to native sons like jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, virtuoso country instrumentalist Steve Wariner, and R&B producer/artist Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds as Indys music legacy, no one is holding their breath for Indianapolis to become the next Motown, Seattle, or Austin, TX.
The point of the Indy MP3 Project is to put an end to the notion that Indianapolis is not a music town. Through a joint effort between the Cultural Development Commission, IndianapolisMusic.net, 92.3 WTTS-FM, and Indys Music Channel we have recruited 170 artists who represent some of the best singers, songwriters, performers, and musicians that Indianapolis has to offer and collected a work from each of them onto this single CD. On this disc youll hear rock, blues, pop, jazz, symphonies, folk, country, and a few styles of music that arent so easy to define. Together the songs weave into a diverse quilt that is the "Indianapolis Sound," a style of music as diverse and colorful as the city that produced it.

As you listen to this disc and select your favorite tracks, keep in mind that this collection only represents one-quarter of the artists who submitted materials for consideration for this collection. Indianapolis and the surrounding communities are full of talented and driven musicians who are writing songs, playing shows, and making records that are on par with anything you can find on the radio. We highly recommend that you use this CD only as a jumping off point as you make your own personal exploration of this citys vibrant music community. Please feel free to share tracks, or even copies of the entire disc, with your friends and help us prove to our city, and then to the rest of the world, that Indianapolis can rock, groove, and sway as well as any town on Earth.
